Un tempo il compito del poet laureate era di celebrare in versi cerimonie quali un'incoronazione o un matrimonio reale, ma oggi non esiste più alcun obbligo specifico. Il titolo venne conferito per la prima volta da Giacomo I a Ben Jonson nel 1616, ma il primo vero poet laureate fu John Dryden, nominato da Carlo II nel 1668. Famosi poets laureate del passato furono William Wordsworth e Alfred Tennyson nell'Ottocento e John Betjeman e Ted Hughes nel Novecento. L'attuale poet laureate è Carol Ann Duffy. Questo titolo esiste anche in altri paesi, tra cui gli Stati Uniti, ma non ha la stessa importanza storica di quello britannico.
